I discovered it when following up from Frank's suggestion of testing through Mail. The truth is that I did this install between hospital visits to my mother, and clearly my brain was addled, so I did things that I don't remember.
Sorry for all the noise. The up-side is that I've learned things - always good. When I came to Mageia I said it felt like coming home. The helpful discussions on the Mageia lists remind me forcibly of my early Linux days, in Mandrake 8. The community was so supportive of a learner.
