I don't expect ImageMagick to be re-written for my sake,

See

convert -version
Version: ImageMagick 6.2.2 01/23/06 Q16
file:/usr/share/ImageMagick-6.2.2/doc/index.html
Copyright: Copyright (C) 1999-2005 ImageMagick Studio LLC
So my image will take:
5100x6494x4*(16/8) bytes = 252 Mb.
If I'm working with 3 images I'm up to
750 (ish) + 1 for the output = 1Gb.
I understand - but I don't have to like it :-)
