| This has turned into quite a length email chronicling my adventures.
| One theme I'm seeing throughout my tests is that I can not get the
| colorspace to reduce on my 64bit images without the use of the PNG8:

| -depth, -quantize or any of the other commands that should alter
| colorspace. Suggestions?

At this point I am going to bow out of the discussion.

While i have studied GIF handling in IM PNG handling has not been a big
issue. Most people are hapy with PNG handling 24/32 colors with
semi-transparency, and do not what to go to the bad old GIF style color
handling of PNG8:

It looks to me IM just treats PNG8 as just a special case, and does not
do much else.

You can put a request into the IM developers forum for say some more
-define controls for PNG8: handlers, but I don't think there is much
call for it.

All I can suggest at this point is to look at more specialised PNG
programs, (like pngtrans and others). Many of these should be on the
PNG web site, or can be found via google.

IM is a generalised Image handler, and while it tries to be all things
for all people, that is an impossible dream unless be her more
programmers on board.
