Anthony, I'm sorry I didn't read "Font Usage" more carefully. I've run your script and convert can now find more than enough fonts. HOWEVER, my problem persists. A ttf in my basic OS X font collection is Baghdad found at /Library/Fonts/Baghdad.ttf. "convert -list type" finds it but I still get the complaint:

To use Helvetica Ghostscript must be working, and its fonts must be installed. If the font is not where "type-ghostscript.xml" defines it, then of course IM will not find it. The error message is tell you it can't even find the 'fallback' font! I say you need to do some installing and updating of the secondary software on your system. Also look at the top level page of IM examples, on methods of finding and defining fonts for IM to use. http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/#font Included is a reference to a linux script, which uses 'locate' to find the fonts on your system to create an updated "type.xml" file.
