Do _any_ other X applications start from that shell? Like xclock, xterm,
or MacGimp? Try "display -display :0 logo.gif" or "DISPLAY=:0 display
logo.gif" to set the display to your local X server.
I do not have a Mac, but recently I used one with X, and if I remember
right there is a console and a xterm application. Both are Unix shells,
but only one has X working. A DISPLAY variable should be set in this
case, to ":0", "localhost:0", or "Fred-Weinhaus-Computer:0". Use "echo
$DISPLAY" to verify this.

You have to open the .profile file in your favorite editor and put the
commands there yourself. Then they will be executed every time you start
a shell.
