Without the -taint  IM will call external programs (ghostscript) to
just directly convert EPS -> PDF, without actually reading (and
rasterizing) the image in memory.

That means you are actually going

   EPS ->  raster  ->  PDF  -> raster  -> PNG

Which is VERY strange way of doing things.
