Given your processor, I'm wondering if there's something like excess paging, slow disk access (i.e., over the network), or other that's slowing it down. Are your timing statistics true for a variety of files? I just used a random pdf that I had. I tried another file about 3M and 20 pages; it took 1:50 elapsed. So, perhaps you just have complex files? -- David N.
