OK after creating a directory so that make install could store the 
documenation (?) there,  ImageMagick 6.5.5-10 is installed.

valgrind no longer complains that there were too many errors. It now says
==19486== LEAK SUMMARY:
==19486==    definitely lost: 0 bytes in 0 blocks.
==19486==      possibly lost: 960 bytes in 3 blocks.
==19486==    still reachable: 72 bytes in 2 blocks.

I suppose the difference could be due to different version sof the various 
libraries.

Any suggestions?
