I suspect in your step 5, you need to put parentheses in the correct locations to avoid apply some of your parameters to both images. I have not done this rounded corner thing. So look at Anthony's example and be sure to isolate the processing of each image with parentheses. Before compositing you need to isolate the processing of the two images, thus you need to put parentheses around the image and the parameters that it applies to only. That is my current best thoughts without actually working on this fully. Otherwise, hopefully Anthony will be able to help.
