Hi All,

I'm new to this list, but was referred here from the Fedora list.

I need to be able to generate a GIF image (well, JPG would do but since
it may often be only black and white that would fall outside the JPG
specification and in any case, GIFs are smaller) on the fly for words of
text in a non-Roman font to be part of a dynamic web page served by
PHP/Apache. Steve Searle suggested that 'convert' might be my friend.

I need to be able to specify the font, the fontsize, and the characters.
I would like the image to be dynamically sized to a given number of pixels
of background on either end of the text, and to be able to specify a
minimum height that a true riser or descender actually used in the text
could exceed, upwards only. Does that sound like a possibility? How
far could 'convert' help me with this?
