Sorry but no improvement in performance. I'm almost wondering if it's a
memory or other problem on the server. What should I be looking for
with the server to improve the response time?

The same command which takes about 8 seconds on the server (VPS) takes
closer to 1 second on my linux pc.

% convert 63.2010-04-28-22-05-48.jpg -quality 75 -resize 300x300 -strip
300.jpg

This second command takes just over 1 second on my desktop and closer to
10 on the server and jacks the load average up 6-7 digits.

% convert 1500KB.jpg -thumbnail '100x100>' -background white -gravity
center -extent 100x100 100.jpg
