I do not exactly know how server-side threading works, but for local
threading, this seems nornmal to me: what is sorted is the list of
messages that are siblings: all the top of the threads, all the answers
to the same message, etc.

So if one message m2 is (considered) an answer of another message m1, it
is normal that it is located just after (or near) m1, whatever their
dates may be.

[Wich reminds me that we may very well consider m2 to be an answer to m1
although m1 may have a date much later than m2. But I never saw that,
and this does not seem to be the case here.]

M-Dev is a very good example, as I have all of them (except maybe some
spam) since a little more than one year, now. If you could give precise
examples of the mis-behavior you observe...

Do you think that the sorting criterion itself could be wrong?

What do you get exactly when you turn off sorting *and* threading. What
are you looking for?

How does Mozilla sort/thread the folder? Is it a local folder (in a
file) or an IMAP one ?

Please be a little more specific about what you observe and what you
were waiting for. Give exact references of the messages you refer to if
they are less than one year old. I would be very happy to provide some
insight or chase the bug...
