Do you know anything about how the configure code works? I tried to trace
through it and the makefile and scripts and ... argh!!! (sorry about that
exlamation, configure is just way complicated) 
Any way, I had real problems trying to figure out how it decides when
--enable-debug is set and which arguments it should add when compiling. I
have�nt figured it out yet, The only thing I wound were several statements
adding the -g and -g3 options, but the details are quite unclear as of yet.
