 I didn't change wxWindows version so if my impressions (I emphasize that
they're nothing more than this) are correct, the slow down is not related
to this.

 Who cares? The idea is that debug code should be tolerably slow on the
developers machines which means that the release version should be quite
fast on any (current generation) machine.
