give you write access to the repository -- even if you don't actually write

 Yes.

 The best way is to run it with --config=file option which makes it use
the configuration file with the given name instead of the registry.
Basically this is going to be almost a parallel installation (almost
it would still share the same program dir, although you can change this too
if you want to).
