Grant, 

I was trying to verify the patch, but for some reason,  my hadoop setup refuses 
to run with "Error reading task output" message. Couldn't get it working after 
lots of effort. Will try it again. If you could post the performance numbers 
before and after the distance calculation improvement, it would be helpful to 
verify if those are in line with expectations.
