Committers from Mahout apply as mentors. The number of students that Mahout will get will be a portion from the ASF quota. So if ASF is getting like 20 people, it will be divided among different projects. I have never been on the mentor side of GSOC, but hope to this year. Grant, Ted, Isabel and Ian will be able to comment better on the topic of ASF quota etc.
