Fair enough, I am biased since I don't ever develop on windows and always run to the safety and familiarity of Cygwin when I must!
In our case again I don't think we would make the project unnecessarily platform dependent - it is Hadoop that perhaps should hear about this rather than Mahout. I don't see why they have to invoke these binaries. But I most agree we should fix up this dependency business so it is simply not an issue where it does not need to be!
