The "job" file is a hadoop bundle - it has all of the mahout classes as a
jar, and it also has the
dependencies inside of its internal "lib" directory (like a war file).
 Hadoop understands this
convention, and lets you use that jar by itself without figuring out what
all dependent jars
need to be copied to the hadoop cluster.
