Worldwide Pantnagar Alumni Association (WPAA)
Monthly Newsletter, February 10, 2003
------------------------------------------------
Greetings !

Last month, you had an opportunity to review WPAA account book and as a result, I was
expecting to receive some queries from some of you. Much to my surprise, not even a
single email showed up in my 'WPAA Mailbox' ! Not that there is anything wrong with
that but it does go on to reflect how much involved you are in activities concerning
WPAA. I was particularly looking forward to hearing from those who have contributed
via fee and/or donations but even that also did not turn out to be the case. In the
absence of any queries, I can only assume that either you trust us one hundred percent
(which is probably a long shot :-) or you just do not care :-(

The reason I brought this up today is because I received a few emails from some of you
who wanted to know what our long term plans are and, where do we see WPAA five years
from now? (These emails were not in response to my last newsletter.) One email even
mentioned the recent Golden Jubilee Celebration of IITs on 17th and 18th Jan in
California and suggested if we could get some cues from there to improve our situation.

Well, I was thinking about responding to these individual emails but then, it just
seemed a better idea that I share my response with all of you as well. Yes, we do have
our goals and objectives and are working very hard to achieve those but there is so
much a handful of us can do. To get beyond a certain level of achievement, everyone
needs to be involved - physically, financially, emotionally, in whatever way possible.
Until we have a much larger involvement, we are going to find it very difficult to get
over the hump.

Our initial goal was to establish WPAA and bring together as many Pantnagar alumni as
possible. We seem to be doing a decent job there, with WPAA being a familiar name in
all Pantnagar circles and having a membership of 1262 alumni in over 40 countries. The
next major goal is to have more participation from members and come up with
initiatives that would not only benefit the university but the whole community in
Pantnagar.

So long story short, we all first need to get much more involved in WPAA activities
through mailing list and other such avenues, collect much more funds through annual
membership fee and contributions, channelize much more communication with GBPUA&T and
once we are to accomplish it, we should then think about how we can play a more
significant role in achieving our goals and objectives.

Well, that brings us to the next segment of this newsletter - WPAA updates.

*** Last month, another WPAA chapter was formed - 'WPAA - Foresters'. According to the
group coordinator, Manmohan Dobriyal, Forestry, 1994 batch, "This group is specially
created to keep up the flag of forestry flying in Pantnagar and around the globe. In
due course of time we will be publishing one newsletter and hold one alumni meet at
Ranichauri to celebrate first anniversary of this group in March, 2003". WPAA would
like to thank Manmohan Dobriyal for taking this initiative and wishes him all the
best. Manmohan, please let me know if you need to setup a separate web page, chat
room, mailing-list or any other such web presence for your chapter.

*** Yearbook 2002 - Another important project that is nearing completion is 'WPAA
Yearbook 2002'. Thanks to Somya Chaudhary, Home Science, 1987 batch, who was kind
enough to accept this responsibility of leading this project and putting it all
together. Special thanks go to Preeti (http://www.itweblink.com/) who is helping us
with some new logos for WPAA. If everything goes as per the plan, you should have a
copy in your mailbox sometime soon. Please visit the WPAA home page to check out the
complete details and exact schedule. Also, feel free to write to her at 'yb2002 at
wpaa dot org' if you have any suggestions, comments or feedback.

And now, getting back to regular fun activities,

*** An International Symposium on "Livestock Production Systems for Sustainable Food
Security and Livelihood in Mountain Areas" was held in Pantnagar on Dec 30-31. Dr. Vir
Singh, would you please share this experience with rest of us and if possible, send us
some pictures too :-)

And finally, a reminder that we love to hear from you - your feedback, comments and
anything that you would like us to know, is highly appreciated. Please write to us at
'admin at wpaa dot org'.

Here are the tasks that are either on-going or were accomplished in recent past:

*** Fund Drive ***
A sum of USD 3000 was collected for Computer Engineering Department, College of
Technology, during a 'Fund Drive' that lasted almost two years. The funds were
delivered to the then Vice-Chancellor, Dr. J. B Chowdhury in Feb, 2002. Head of
Computer Engineering Department, Prof. R N Mishra later informed us via an email that
a decision had been made to purchase a LCD projector for the department.

WPAA would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who contributed towards
this Fund Drive' and helped it make a success.

*** WPAA Chapters ***
If you are a Coordinator of a WPAA chapter, a member of another Pantnagar association
or know about one, please log your entry here and share it with rest of us. Also, do
let us know if you need to setup a separate web page, chat room, mailing-list or any
other such web presence for your chapter.
