Should Mailman be stripping these out as part of its processing?

Unlikely it's that. More likely, its because you've replied to posts
without removing the msg_footer from the quoted material in your reply.

Be glad you didn't do what I once unthinkingly did at

Every time Google, Bing, etc crawl that page, I get an unsub confirmation.
