That is correct (I work for Cobalt).

Yes.  Note that doing so voids the support contract with Cobalt.

Its basically a lightly modified RedHat box (fairly heavily hacked
kernel).  The version of RH will depend on the individual box (and I
don't remember either).  Simplest route is to check for updates on the
Cobalt FTP site for any of the bits, and if not present, build from raw
sources locally.
