I've used check_perms repeatedly.  There's a security cron job running
on my computer currently which keeps aggressively switching the
permissions on the mailman directory to something less dangerous, but
switching the permissions back to what they're supposed to be doesn't seem
to have any effect on the problem, whatsoever.  (I've tried it several
times, out of exasperation.)

New lists seem to behave exactly like the old ones.

I'm running with defaults.

Nothing but some punk kid failing to compromise my system this morning.
