Just for the archives, I run MM 2.1 on a few systems using the Red Hat 7.3 python2 rpms and I don't get any errors like you were seeing.
I'm also running it on a number of other servers, a mixture of Red Hat 7.2, 7.3, and 8.0, and have never seen this problem before. I'm not sure what caused the problem, but when I installed the tarball version of Python2.2, it corrected it. There must have been a broken link or something.
