One question: Should I be looking at a better MTA?
For mailing lists, postfix tends to be better suited to the job out-of-the-box. If you know what you're doing, it is possible to configure sendmail to do the job better than even postfix can do (on the same hardware), but it takes work and spending some money to upgrade the hardware.
