Check your /etc/exim/configure where directors are called out. You can run exim in debug mode by typing ./exim -d9 -bd, and try sending emails to your list, you will catch the error, my error was in my director, I changed "guest" to "daemon" and was all set. You shouldn't have to recompile every time, even though alot of people are saying that. Create logs with the debugger of your MTA, logs are your friend.

I always do it this way:
make distclean, then *configure* with the above, then make.
