I'm unable to reproduce such error and since I'm using mailman since 2003 and I never had the problem I just described I would know if anyone have any idea on what happened or how can I recover lost messages, if I can.
I don't have any idea what happened, but the only way there would be anything left would be if Mailman moved the messages from one subdirectory in /usr/local/mailman/qfiles to another, as opposed to just outright deleting them. You can go rooting around in there to see if you find any trace of them, but I think that's unlikely.
I'm sorry, I wish I had better news for you.
