In some versions of linux, it is used to run things hourly/daily/
weekly/monthly.  I see it in both suse and redhat with things like
logrotate, tripwire, and makewhatis. OTOH, none of my bsd systems are set 
up this way.

Either way, it's not really a mailman question.
