Try running these as any 'ordinary' user - not root.

Also try sending mail using the example in the post at
<http://mail.python.org/pipermail/mailman-users/2005-May/044746.html>.

If the "x = smtplib.SMTP()" in this script succeeds, but there is a
failure after that, try adding

x.set_debuglevel(1)

immediately following

x = smtplib.SMTP()
