Hi Mark,
I renamed the old mailman folder and restarted both mailman and apache.
I retried emailing the list using my test-join alias and now got the
following error:

I have verfied that the mailman service is running on my host, so I
don't understand why I'm getting this error.

Well, you could know for sure if you remove, rename or make unreadable
the old /var/lib/mailman tree.
