unwieldy ... it would be nice if I could automatically translate those
long URI's into shorter versions.

On a related note, if those really long FAQ urls from the Mailman wiki are problematic, the wiki actually does generate short URLs for posting to lists. (Click on "info" from the page to get the short link.)
