Usually the PostScript output is used to create PDFs. It has been a really long time since I took a LaTeX file and created anything from it. I thought the DVI was used to create the PS file. If it is also used to create the HTML and TXT files, i.e., the source for creation of those files, then it
is OK. If only used to create the PS file, then it might be suspect.

It all depends on your setup. On my mac, pdfs are created directly from the LaTeX. On my linux machines, I believe it usually goes from the DVI/PS but sometimes can be done directly from the LaTeX (this is not the default), and goodness knows what it might be like on windows.

Someone on this list that knows LaTeX extremely well, might be able to figure what needs to change in the TEX file so those level headings aren't lost.

I might be able to figure this out. It may not be the TeX -- we might have to change the options in the makefile or something. I'll try to take a look at it next week if nothing else comes up.

To be honest, though, my solution to this sort of problem with other Mailman documentation in the past has been to import everything into our wiki so conversion is done there and with consistent software.

I still not convinced it's the best possible solution, but it has greatly limited the number of queries I get on the subject.
