That's true, but more importantly, /var/lib/mailman/ should be 2775 and group mailman as should all the sub-directories archives, data, lists, locks, logs, qfiles and spam. /var/lib/mailman/archives/private is tricky. it should be group mailman and either 2771 or owned by the web server user and 2770.
