There is an up to date branch at
https://mail.python.org/archives/list/mailman-users@python.org/ that
integrates the htdig <http://htdig.sourceforge.net/> search engine with
Mailman 2.1.

As mentioned in another reply, There is also Namazu
<http://www.namazu.org/>, and there is info on using that with Mailman
at <https://wiki.list.org/x/4030581>.
