I use xType, which is free, very simple, quite old and I am not sure it
is still updated, but in my hands he has been working OK for several
years now (I am on Sierra).

My apologies if this was already mentioned, but I think TextExpander

a more flexible and easier way to do this.
thanks, I’ve been using that one and the keyboard short cuts
sometimes just don’t work.
All in all I consider Textexpander buggy and I was looking for an
alternative ;-)

Just save template mails as drafts in Drafts, with appropriate
subject to indicate that this is a template, and Edit as new mail
each time?
This is what I do, except that I also copy the message to a
"Stationery" mailbox (the term Eudora used), to make it easy to
find.
When I want to send such a message, I select it in the "Stationery"
mailbox and then select Edit as New Message under the Message menu.
