The short version is that there’s no way to do push notifications
for IMAP accounts on iOS without their server logging into your
account and keeping an IDLE connection open.
Many iOS email clients do this. It’s the price you pay for having
timely push notifications.

That might have been true 4 years ago when that post was written, but
iOS has had background refresh for some time. It's no excuse anymore.
Storing passwords on servers is a security nightmare. Whoever wrote that
article clearly has little security clue.
