If you set up a smart mailbox for read messages, you would be able to apply a rule to that.

It is a little confusing at first, but I think that does describe how it works best. It works on the fly for mail as it is added to a mailbox.

so my rule for 'when message is read' kinda defeats the purpose, I suppose. Bummer.
