The problem that I experienced was that the message pane divider was unresponsive until I had click-dragged past the minimum height for the window. My experience from other multi-pane windows is that the divider is responsive. The user sees it moving immediately, and of course this has ramifications for minimum heights because it must be able to accept any height between zero and the window height.
