Earlier this year there was definitely releases with a memory leak issue, but I

Yes, the latter would be expected with this kind of behavior.

The issue might be related to you using specific features or maybe viewing 
specific messages in MailMate, but it's hard to say. When you observe this 
behavior then maybe try making a sample of the process in Activity Monitor and 
send it to me using “Help > Send Feedback”. Maybe I can spot something 
suspicious.

Note that immediately after launch and while receiving/sending a few messages 
then it's expected that memory usage increases, but after this it should not 
increase considerably.

You can also try taking account(s) offline for a while to see if that stops the 
increasing memory usage. This would be a sign that it's somehow related to 
server synchronization (maybe some kind of busy-looping issue).
