Warren, Have you tried selecting the smart Mailbox All/Junk/Deleted (located in AllMessage Filters) then search for your item? The default search used (All Message Filters) seems to specifically exclude deleted by default. If you look at the Search box carefully you will see the assignment barely visible, “Search: All Message Filters”. It’s been this way for several versions including the current one.
There may be a setting to change this, but I like not bothering to search deleted folders personally which could speed a search where I need it. Respectfully, Henry Seiden - - Techworks Pro Co.
