I'm not really seeing any obvious problems with SPF macros at mailbox providers. It's more that various testing/validation tools haven't been fully built out to use a proper SPF library or have full support for anything beyond the most simple SPF configuration.
Maybe others will have evidence to share. Not running into issues personally, though.
