So I bit the bullet and bought a very cheap(< $12/year ssl cert) and
installed it.
You can avoid this cost and the annual task with any of the free
certificate providers using ACME for auto-renewal, including but not
limited to Let's Encrypt. I use LE for multiple mail systems and web
servers and have for years. Aside from their (now complete) transition
off of an expired secondary issuer CA, there have been no problems.
