I realize this is a little OT, but I think many users here will find
this useful.

As of late last month, MS has re-enabled POP3 access to Hotmail and
Live Mail. This means you can add your account to GMail's "accounts"
and get all your mail in Mailplane.

The story here is a little amusing. Hotmail had been losing users to
GMail, as I'm sure you all know, so they came out with Live Mail to
try to improve things. However, Live Mail was paid for by advertising,
so if you used an offline reader like Mailplane you wouldn't be seeing
the ads and they wouldn't be making their money. So they turned off
POP3 and WebDAV access.

The backlash was huge. Long time users who had been using Outlook
Express with Hotmail for many years were suddenly tossed off the
system. Then the iPhone came out, and everyone that was still using
Hotmail couldn't get their mail on the iPhone. Apparently there was a
rush for the exits.

So now we have Hotmail in Mailplane. Why do I care? Because now that
all of my mail has been copied into GMail, I can close down my Live
Mail account for good. Their spam checking is utterly useless, and 90%
of all mail I get there is spam. But I couldn't close down my account
because I had about 1000 messages of "historical interest".

I'm sure many of you are in a similar situation, so go for it!
