A-ha! I think the new problem, with the main window, was caused by Gmail itself this afternoon, which was not functioning fully (they sent out warning messages).
That appears to have been fixed and Mailplane is up and running - and the new window problem is resolved too. Hooray! Thanks for your help Ruben.
