@Ed: Are the background accounts "signed in"? Open the account drawer and check the icon next to each account. If it has a red cross, please click the "Sign in" button at the bottom of the drawer. To do this automatically, enable Preferences > Accounts > Automatically login when needed setting. @Daniel: Go to Preferences > General > New Mail Notifications and select "All signed-in accounts" for Growl, Sound and message counter.
