You're right: The focus isn't on the search field. However, this is either a
Gmail shortcoming, or Google wanted it this way. Maybe it's best to contact
Google: http://mail.google.com/support/?hl=en

I am not aware of any scripts fixing this issue, but maybe it could be done
with GreaseKit:
