The original poster may have a different idea, but one way I see in
"tabs" is similar to when you have multiple tabs in a browser.  You
can have several web pages open at once, each in a separate tab within
a single window.

Another way it would work for me is similar to what you can have in an
email application.  For example, in Thunderbird you can have a 3-panel
window: (a) Left panel contains your accounts all listed; (b) Top
right panel could show the contents of whatever mailbox you have
selected in (a); (c) Lower right panel then shows the contents of
whatever email message you have selected in (b).  I guess that is
referred to a "classic view layout" mode.
