Not my thread, but I am liking the minimalist chrome extension too.
My favorite parts:

1) easy to customize which bits you like and don't like
2) the collapsing headers (ie, search, top menu, settings corner,
etc.).  This would be especially handy for mailplane where they really
aren't needed.
3) hiding the blank stars (makes it look cleaner)
