Update: It looks like this is a new Gmail problem. The "loading" issue is triggered after opening a Growl notification, a Mailplane URL, or by clicking a conversation in the menu bar item.
You can use the "View > Reload Page" menu item to correct the issue. *Workaround:* Go to "Preferences > Tweak UI" and enable "Always open new mail notifications in a new window" for Growl and the menu bar item. For the mailplane URL I've not workaround. Does the workaround fix the issue for now?
