That depends on your usage.  In my original message to Richard I wrote:

  original, encrypted form.  It's good to have the original message, but
  it has the downside that the content of these messages isn't
  searchable.  At least in my case, the encryption is for security
  during transmission, so an index wouldn't pose a security risk.

I hope this clarifies my use case.
